How does the administration differentiate a motorboat from a sailboat? In the first case, the engine is the primary mode of propulsion, while in the second case, it is considered an auxiliary mode of propulsion.
For the engine to be considered an auxiliary propulsion mode, simply put, the sail area must be greater than the result of the following formula: 0.07(mLDC)2/3, where mLDC is the weight of the vessel in loaded condition. This applies to most sailboats you encounter, meaning the
pleasure boating license with coastal option is not required. We are not referring here to
the offshore extension of the coastal license.
We do not intend to alter the stance of die-hard sailors determined to maintain their freedom; we completely understand them.
Infornav has implemented an
intensive 7-day sailing course that includes:
- Sailing autonomy (You will sail solo from the 5th day)
- A safety course (You will know how to react in dangerous situations)
- The coastal license (You will gain the knowledge and skills to obtain the coveted certificate)
- Port maneuvers (where many face challenges)
Let’s be clear, the "sailing license" does not exist administratively; someone with no nautical experience can buy a sailboat and venture offshore as they please. At
Infornav, this is a specific training course designed to equip you with sufficient skills to become autonomous in sailing. You will undergo a real safety course and learn how to maneuver in a port alongside other vessels.
We do not wish to debate here the necessity of having the pleasure boating license with the coastal option to practice sailing. We are experts in training for nautical risk prevention, and of course, we would prefer that all practitioners are fully aware of current regulations and markings. However, as we have mentioned, we completely understand the position of those who value their freedom.
